When foreign immigration authorities, universities, or civil registration offices ask for 'Korean civil documents,' they rarely specify which of the five types they want — or they use outdated terminology like '호적.' This causes Koreans to order the wrong document, get it apostilled, have it translated, and then discover the receiving authority wants something different. This guide maps each Korean civil document type to its international use cases — so you order the right one the first time.
Korea's old family register system (호적) was organized under a family head (호주) and abolished in January 2008 as part of a gender equality reform. All Korean civil records now use the individual-based Family Relations Registration System (가족관계등록제도). Documents are no longer issued under the 호주 — each person has their own individual record. If a foreign authority asks for a '호적등본,' the current equivalent is the 가족관계증명서.
The 기본증명서 records fundamental personal information about a single individual: birth registration, name, registration number, any changes to legal capacity, and death registration. It is the closest equivalent to a birth certificate in international contexts.
The 가족관계증명서 shows the subject individual and their direct family relationships in one document: parents, spouse, and children. It replaced the old 호적등본 as the primary document proving family structure.
The 혼인관계증명서 shows a person's marriage history — current marriage, previous marriages, and divorces.

Can I request these documents for a family member who is in Korea?
Direct family members (parents, spouse, children) can request civil documents for each other. If you are abroad, you can order these documents through a professional agency using a power of attorney, or through an overseas Korean consulate.
The foreign authority asked for a document 'issued within the last 3 months.' Does this apply to Korean civil documents?
Yes. Many immigration and civil registration authorities require freshly issued documents — typically within 3 or 6 months of the submission date. Always order new documents specifically for each application, even if you have previously apostilled copies of the same documents.
What is the difference between 일반 (standard) and 상세 (detailed) versions of these certificates?
The standard version shows current information only — current family relations, current marriage. The detailed version shows historical information — previous marriages, deceased family members, children who are no longer registered in the family.
